Sam Paine is a PhD Researcher within the Sustainable Energy Research Group at the University of Southampton. His PhD thesis aims “to develop and critically assess methods of charging for heat in council housing and their impacts on carbon, behaviour, wellbeing and economics”.

Sam graduated from BSc (hons) Environmental Science at the University of Portsmouth in 2011 and from MSc Energy and Sustainability at the University of Southampton in 2014.

In 2013 Sam joined SRE Ltd, a leading independent Sustainability and Renewable Energy Consultancy for the built environment in Southern England as an Assistant Sustainability Consultant, and then full Consultant. Sam’s worked on commercial BREEAM projects, Low and Zero Carbon (LZC) feasibility studies and technical support for sustainability statements. He also supported energy modelling projects.

In 2015 Sam joined the Sustainable Energy Research Group (SERG) at the University of Southampton as a PhD Research Student. Sam works closely with Portsmouth City Council for his PhD project and assists as a liaison for other UoS/PCC projects.

Research interests

My current research interests are space and domestic hot water heating technologies, methods of charging for heat and heating related behaviour in council housing. Wider research interests include energy performance of buildings, thermal comfort, sustainable energy technologies and building energy performance gaps.
