Future Solent brings together leading academics from the University of Southampton with local, businesses, the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH) to develop pathways to a low carbon economy in the Solent region, stimulate sustainable growth, create jobs and reduce the region’s environmental impact.
Professor AbuBakr Bahaj , Professor of Sustainable Energy and the Head of the Energy and Climate Change Division at the University of Southampton was a founding member of Future Solent and is a Board member.
Members of the University’s long-established Sustainable Energy Research Group (SERG) have studied energy use in cities around the world for over 15 years. They currently contribute to a number of Future Solent themes involving the scoping of regional energy resources and energy consumption profiles and how could the latter be satisfied through low carbon technologies and energy efficiency measures. Others include identifying how SERG’s world-class research can benefit the Solent region through collaboration with local authorities and businesses to promote growth, create and safeguard jobs and develop a skills base in the region.
Professor Bahaj and his colleagues have a current research funding portfolio of £18m related to cities and low carbon energy technologies.
