The Institute of Irrigation and Development Studies (IIDS) is a multidisciplinary postgraduate centre in Engineering and the Environment. It carries out teaching, research, consulting and training, both nationally and internationally.

For over 35 years, we have offered MSc programmes taught by a team of staff and visiting lecturers who have made specialist careers in many areas of international development: there are now close to 1,000 IIDS graduates working all over the world. Our current research includes work on the water resources of large river basins, regional assessment of evapotranspiration using remote sensing, optimisation of irrigation water delivery schedules, evaluation of drainage systems, aquifer recharge, impacts of climate change on water demands and the simulation of canal water delivery in archaeological studies.
