The challenge of understanding the interaction between hydrodynamics and the action of the swimmer is one that has considerable similarity with that of ship design. Three PhD students are currently carrying out research funded by UKSport and British Swimming. A research fellow is investigating the use of wireless sensors following on from an ESPRIT ‘proof of concept’ 15 month project. Aspects of research that are under consideration include the use of unsteady computational fluid dynamics, musco-skeletal analysis using Anybody and hydrodynamic testing in support of the performance coaches at British Swimming.
