Research project: A Particle Based Method for Flow Simulations in Hydrodynamics and Hydroelasticity

In this work, interest will be focused on the development of fluid-structure interaction computations with a focus on implementing particle based method in general and for seakeeping analysis of ships, treated as a rigid body, operating in rough seas in particular.

Studies on the interaction between rigid body and free surface without the implementation of particle based method have shown many good results. The most well-known computational method used to solve and analysing problems involving fluid flows is computational fluid dynamic (CFD). This computational method has also majorly used in simulating solid mechanics and even in interaction with elastic boundaries. However, in an advanced study of free surface around ships, particle based methods offer more realistic analysis for free surface that experienced large deformation which is still a limitation to the traditional mesh-based methods. Ships structures may be treated as small particle similar to the fluid domain or may be modelled by other commercial computational mesh-based method. With this ability, complex situation with high non-linearity can be simulated where ships structures are freely moving in severe sea state. In particular, the outcomes of this study will focus on developing a method as following;

  • Three dimensional seakeeping simulation method and software i.e. rigid body motions in waves encountered at arbitrary heading.
  • Three dimensional simulation method and software of the dynamic behaviour of a flexible ship in waves, predicting wave-induced motions, distortions (e.g. springing) and loads.
