Research project: Lightweight ceramic nanotubes reinforced polymer composite coatings and nanofibres with improved impact resistance and responsive functions

Currently Active:
Yes

The project considers a prospective approach to improve the impact resistant properties of new polymer composites by addition of ceramic nanotubes.

The project considers a prospective approach to improve the impact resistant properties of new polymer composites by addition of ceramic nanotubes, which also allow introduction of several responsive functions (such as embedded sensing of the degree of fibre degradation) to new materials.

The main current challenges in the development of impact resistant materials are insufficient strength of the fibres, degradation of components of the composite, total weight of the protective structure and its manufacturing cost. The project addresses these challenges by reinforcement of the polymer fibres using light weight ceramic nanotubes, implementing the concept of a cost-effective three dimensional weaving process provided by  electrospinning. The control and inhibition of the fibre degradation rate can be achieved by implementing additional functionalities to the nanotubes.
