To understand why hip implants fail.

Project Overview

Though the metal-on-metal implants produce much lower wear amounts by volume than the traditional metal-on-plastic implants, the particles produced are much smaller, nanometer size rather than micrometer size. As a result, billions more particles are produced in a size dimension that may interact more adversely with human cells. It is important to understand the sizes and shapes of the wear particles produced as well as the amounts. The serum lubricant in the simulator will be periodically collected and the particles in it separated and analysed in an effort headed by Monica Ratoi.
