Why did you choose to study at the University of Southampton?
From various league tables, I noticed Southampton was consistently a leading university with their Faculty of Engineering. I wanted to attend a university that was highly regarded for my chosen course, as well as a university that was not necessarily specialist. For example, not simply a science university like Imperial College London, as I felt I would meet more like minded people who would not just focus on academia but would also be interested in other societies and sports.
Why did you choose to study your course?
I originally wanted to work in Formula One and so completed my first two years as an Aeronautics and Astronautics student. My strong subjects have always been physics and maths, and so a more inventive degree in engineering seemed much more appealing than straight physics or straight maths.
What has been the highlight of your time here so far?
Although it may sound cheesy, the people you meet must be the highlight of your university life. I can honestly say the people I’ve met have influenced me so much in terms of my personal development. Also for me, I started rowing at university (something I would never do had I not come here!) and it also has helped developed a certain determination that I’d never experienced before.
What do you enjoy most about living in Southampton?
Although Southampton itself may not be the most picturesque city, the location of being so close to London and close to other cities such as Brighton, Bournemouth, and Portsmouth is fantastic for having weekends away!
What have you enjoyed most about your course so far?
My astronautics module in second year was fantastic for learning about space flight and rocket science. It was the first time I felt like I could actually say I study rocket science!
Can you provide an outline of your project? How are you finding your project so far?
My project outline is essentially evaluating whether recent government legislation has improved access on public transport for disabled people. So far the project is going very well, especially since I haven’t written an essay in years, so it is taking a while to get back into the swing of things.
How have the resources and facilities available at Southampton help you with your project?
The main resources at Southampton are certainly the staff. They are all experts in their required fields so they certainly have the most insight to my project. The Boldrewood campus is also a fantastic place to work independently, the new buildings are always comfortable and present a calm environment to work in.
If you could offer prospective students one piece of advice, what would it be?
University isn’t just about your degree. Of course it’s a huge part, but the way you develop as a person will happen outside of the lecture hall in societies. So I would say get stuck in! Meeting new people and trying something you may be awful at is uncomfortable, but the memories and friends you gain as a result will really make the University experience for you.
