In addition to Southampton’s excellent reputation as a world-leading centre for audiology and research, I found the atmosphere on campus to be very welcoming and friendly.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Southampton?

Firstly, Southampton has an excellent reputation as one of the world-leading centres for audiology and research, in general. On the Open Days, the general atmosphere around campus was very friendly and welcoming. It was clear that the University values its students as people, and encourages curiosity and independence.

Why did you choose to study your course?

I like the combination of healthcare and science. I always knew I wanted to be in healthcare in some capacity. Audiology is a profession that allows me to interact with people, but to also use science and technology in order to best help them. The technology available to us is constantly advancing and developing; it is a very rewarding area to be in.

What has been the highlight of your time here so far?

The highlight has to be the chance to meet so many new people, from not only different parts of the country, but also the world. I have made some lifelong friends during my time studying at university.

What do you enjoy most about living in Southampton?

It is a great part of the country to live in. Being on the south coast, Southampton is close to some beautiful areas of countryside and beaches, whilst still being very well-connected in terms of travel, with its many bus, train and plane routes. Also, the bus and cycle transport links around the city are very useful for students.

What have you enjoyed most about your course so far?

Being part of a fundraising committee and organising a Christmas-themed party for charities such as Action on Hearing Loss. It was a fantastic opportunity to get staff and students involved and raising money for an organisation whose work is so relevant to our subject.

What are your lecturers and supervisors like? Have you found them supportive?

Due to being such a small cohort/class, it allows for much closer and supportive relationships between staff and students, across all the year groups. Lecturers are easily contactable and often go out of their way to help, whilst also encouraging independent learning.

How did the course you study at Southampton help you to secure your placement?

The University organises and secures our placements on our behalf, liaising with and training appropriate and experienced supervisors. The University are always a point of contact if we require extra support whilst on placement.

How did you find your placement? What did you enjoy most about it?

My placement gave me so much more confidence in my abilities. As it was one of my first times being in a clinical environment, it was often a challenging experience, but was also incredibly rewarding. I most enjoyed the fact that each patient presented me with their own individual needs and concerns, which meant there was rarely a dull moment!

If you could offer prospective students one piece of advice, what would it be?

Make the most of the wealth of opportunities available to you. The experiences you have and contacts you make while you’re at university will stand you in good stead for the future.
