Simon Mathieson MEng Ship Science
Hi, I'm Simon Mathieson and I studied MEng Ship Science within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.
This course is well known throughout the maritime industry, so telling someone you have a Ship Science degree from the University of Southampton, instantly brings recognition.
Signing up for an MEng Ship Science at Southampton was a logical decision for Simon Mathieson, who is now in the fourth year of his degree programme. "This course is well known throughout the maritime industry, so telling someone you have a Ship Science degree from the University of Southampton instantly brings recognition," he says. Simon was also impressed that the Southampton course was accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology.
He has enjoyed carrying out practical experiments during his individual project, "Instead of learning things from lecture notes, research papers or books, there was a chance to get some hands on experience and I'm looking forward to this aspect of my group project this year too," he explains. "The equipment available for research is quite extensive, with a reasonable capability for wind tunnel testing, materials testing and even ship model testing in the towing tank."
Simon has valued the help and support from academic staff: "There are many different characters among the lecturers and tutors but they are all happy to help us, especially if the students are putting the work in themselves. I have definitely found the staff to be supportive with both academic and non-academic issues."
