oil-tanker

A team of Ship Science students have been working on the design of a 3 metre autonomous model ship for their final year group design project.

Sponsored by an oil major the team have designed and built a model version of a commercial oil tanker. The model has been designed to be unmanned and provide maximum energy efficiency in waves.

The students tested their design making use of a variety of facilities including both our onsite towing tank and the QinetiQ towing tank as well as testing at the local Timsbury Lake Ship Handling Centre in Romsey.

"The project has been really good because I have been able to combine the theory that I have learnt throughout the course and apply it to something practical. It's also provided us with good links to industry using commercial facilities and working with our sponsor." Kimberly Neale, Ship Science student.
