Who we are

We have a lively and dedicated staff team and broad, imaginative programmes of study. Our teaching is based on the latest thinking in literary studies.  92% of English students were satisfied or very satisfied with the teaching of their course in the 2017 National Student Survey.

Our approach

Our commitment to research-led teaching is reflected in all our activities. We're proud of the contributions we make to our individual fields, and see the quality of our research as a major reason for students to choose English at Southampton.

We have a lively and dedicated team of staff, many of whom have joined Southampton in the last few years from a range of other universities here and abroad.

We offer a broad and imaginative programme with an interdisciplinary emphasis, drawing on the most recent developments in literary studies. We cover the full range of English literature, with particular strengths in medieval and Renaissance studies, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literature and culture, modernism, and international writing; our courses also give you the opportunity to study film and creative writing. Our teaching is supported by a full programme of visits by international scholars.

Our teaching and assessment methods are varied and often innovative, with a relatively small examined component and an emphasis on various forms of assessed work.

We aim to create a friendly, informal atmosphere in which students feel free to come and ask for advice and guidance, and to provide a well-defined structure of pastoral and academic care to support you throughout your degree.

Research-led teaching

Our courses are taught by specialists in the relevant area, building first-hand research into the syllabus.

Our third-year undergraduate dissertation provides our students with a strong foundation for later postgraduate work.

  • In addition to its excellent ratings in both teaching and research, Southampton offers an English degree that is very 'adventurous'. One is able to study English on its own or combine it with other disciplines such as film, history or music.
