Research interests

My research focuses on the motif of Jewishness in the Life and Work of Russian/American author, Vladimir Nabokov. I aim to examine how historical and social contexts inform Nabokov’s depiction of Jewishness in his works. I look at antisemitism in pre-Revolutionary Russia, the Russian émigré community in interwar Berlin and Paris, the Holocaust, and post-War America. I will expand on my MA thesis, “The Wandering Jew in Vladimir Nabokov”, which considered the history of the Legend of the Wandering Jew alongside my translation of Nabokov’s poem “Agasfer”, mapping connections with his later works. My research framework analyses the theoretical terms antisemitism and philosemitism, attempting to form a new term to describe Nabokov’s transparent and compassionate treatment of Jewish people and causes.

PhD Supervision

My thesis is entitled ‘Vladimir Nabokov and the Jewish Question’ and is supervised by Dr Devorah Baum (English), Dr Claire Le Foll (History) and Dr George Gilbert (History).

I am a recipient of the Karten Outreach Fellowship as part of the Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish Relations. This involves organising outreach and educational events for sixth form students and adults through Lifelong Learning. I am involved with the organisation of Southampton’s Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) event.
