Professor Michael Wheeler is a Visiting Professor of English Literature at the University of Southampton, which he joined in 1999.

Michael Wheeler was the founding Director of the Ruskin Centre at Lancaster University, where he led the project to build the award-winning Ruskin Library to house the world's greatest collection of Ruskin material, and subsequently (1999-2001) the Director of Chawton House Library, home of the Centre for the Study of Early English Women's Writing (1600-1830), with which the University is formally linked.

He was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge, and University College, London, where his PhD was on Elizabeth Gaskell, and has published extensively on Victorian fiction, the literature and theology of death and the future life, Ruskin, and Roman Catholicism.

He is the Chair of the Murray Bequest to Birkbeck College, London. He has research interests in Victorian cultural history, focusing on the relationship between literature, religion, politics and the arts.

Research interests

Michael's book, 1845: public lives and private letters in a year of crisis, is forthcoming. He is currently working on W.E. Gladstone.
