Dr Stephanie Jones is an Associate Professor in English at the University of Southampton.

I hold a BA and an LLB from the Australian National University, and a PhD from Cambridge.

I work on literature about marine and maritime worlds, with a particular focus on the Indian Ocean. My research spans the interdisciplinary fields of postcolonial and decolonial studies, law and literature, and the environmental humanities. I have published work on East African law and literature; the poetics and metaphors of international maritime law and lore; fictional and historical piracy and privateering; and literary and legal 'belonging'.

I am a member of the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, the Centre for Imperial and Post Colonial Studies, and the Centre for Modern and Contemporary Writing. I am on the editorial boards of Wasafiri, Law and Humanities, and Law and Critique.

Research interests

I welcome applications for postgraduate study on maritime literature, and/or within the interdisciplinary field of law and literature. I have particular interests in literary and legal narratives of the Indian Ocean, African literatures, literature of the South Asian diaspora, Australian literature, and debates within/between literary theory and jurisprudence.

My promotion of research into the literature and law of the Indian Ocean began with a project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council Landscape and Environment Programme.

It expanded through an interdisciplinary workshop on 'Piracy and Jurisprudence' and through involvement with the AHRC network on 'Subjects of Law: Rightful Selves and the Legal Process in Imperial Britain and the British Empire'.

This project currently continues through my work with the British Association of South Asian Studies and Oceanic Humanities for the Global South.

Please see my Publication page for special issues of the journals InterventionsWasafiri and Contemporary South Asia emerging from this work.
