PhD studentship in English

Published: 17 January 2012

Following the award of a Higher Education Academy Departmental Development grant, the department of English at the University of Southampton is offering a three year PhD studentship in return for assistance in setting up a teachers’ network in the Southampton area.

This network will support our undergraduates on school placements connected with the following modules: International Writing; Holocaust Literature; Post-war Literature and Culture; Shakespeare. The student will help to liaise with local schools and teachers; assist in the organisation of special events and life long learning days connected with the project; and contribute to the dissemination of the results of the project.

The HEA project is funded for fifteen months, but the studentship (£14,400 per annum including fees) will continue for a total of three years in return for some teaching in years 2 and 3.

You will have an excellent first degree and a Masters degree in English, or other relevant subject area. Your research topic should be in line with at least one of the areas covered by the project (International Writing; Holocaust Literature; Post-war Literature and Culture; Shakespeare), and may, if you wish, also be related to education, although that is not a requirement. The PhD thesis will be your own research. You will need to submit a research proposal (max 500 words) with your application.

How to apply:

Submit both an application to study at the University of Southampton and a funding application form.
For details on how to apply to study at the University of Southampton please visit www.southampton.ac.uk/postgraduate
The funding application form and more details are available at www.southampton.ac.uk/humanities/postgraduate/money_matters.page

Please make clear you are applying for the HEA PhD Studentship when you return your completed form.

Please note that to be eligible for consideration for an award you must have also submitted an application to study at the University of Southampton. All awards are made on a competitive basis.

Deadline:

Work on the HEA project will begin as soon as possible in line with the criteria for the funding. The deadline for this studentship is therefore earlier than for other University of Southampton studentships: 1 February 2012.
