Jane Austen continues to fascinate scholars and ordinary readers alike. Her novels sell in their millions across the globe and are frequently adapted for stage and screen. But what is the secret of their appeal?

Our reporter Karen Woods has spoken to Dr Gillian Dow from the University of Southampton’s Centre for Eighteenth-Century Studies and Sandy Lerner from Chawton House Library who has written a sequel to the ever-popular Pride and Prejudice.
