English at Southampton Excels in National Student Survey

English courses at Southampton have achieved some of the highest student satisfaction rates in the UK in the National Student Survey 2012.
The student satisfaction rate for Single Honours English is now running at 98%, higher than any other English department among the Russell Group of leading UK research-intensive Universities. Our combined honours programmes achieved exceptional student satisfaction rates too, with 100% of English and History and English and German students expressing satisfaction with their courses. The quality of teaching in English was also commended in the survey, with 99% of respondents in agreement with the statement that staff in English are good at explaining things.
Head of English, Professor Ros King said:
‘The 2012 NSS scores are the icing on the cake in a year when English at Southampton has been consistently and repeatedly praised, by internal and external assessors alike, for its distinctive and successful programme. We offer a wide range of modules, unusual variety in our assessment tasks and methods, and consistently high quality in our research-led teaching. The enthusiasm of our staff, their varied and innovative approaches to teaching, the myriad opportunities that students enjoy for individual discussion of their work, and our critically supportive staff-student relations, all serve to encourage independent thinking and creativity amongst our students.’
