Dr Marianne O'Doherty's The Indies and the Medieval West wins Book Prize

A monograph by English and Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Culture Lecturer Dr Marianne O’Doherty has won a European Society for the Study of English prize for a first book in Cultural Studies in English published in 2012 and 2013.
The Indies and the Medieval West: Thought, Report, Imagination (Brepols, 2013) explores the reading, interpretation, and illustration of travel accounts and other literary and cartographic representations of the Indian Ocean world in late medieval Western Europe. The judging panel commended the book’s ‘brilliant reconstruction’ of the ‘intricate European networks of circulation of maps, books, and manuscripts, in which England has a significant part’, as well as its illumination of these sources’ ‘specific mental worlds... in a context that was properly their own’. Marianne travelled to the European Society for the Study of English biennial conference in Kosice, Slovakia on 1 September to collect her prize.
