Charles-Germain de Saint-Aubin: a Voltairean embroiderer in Enlightenment Paris

Charles-Germain de Saint-Aubin (1721-86) was a luxury embroiderer to the court of Louis XV and to the social elite of Enlightenment Paris.  For most of his adult life, he maintained a book of comic drawings that reflect his life and times. Witty, bawdy, sentimental, quizzical and politically radical by turns, the 'Livre de caricatures tant bonnes que mauvaises' would have landed him and his family in the Bastille had it become known. This extraordinary vantage-point on Enlightenment Paris is only now beginning to offer up its secrets.

The John Rule Memorial Lecture is being sponsored by the Southampton Centre for Eighteenth-Century Studies.
