Entry requirements

To undertake postgraduate study in English you will need to meet the following criteria.

Postgraduate taught programmes

We expect candidates to have achieved, or be predicted, an upper second class honours degree, or equivalent, in a relevant subject.

Postgraduate research programmes

We expect candidates to have a relevant postgraduate masters degree or equivalent.

English language

International students applying to study towards the MA in Medieval and Renaissance Culture, Eighteenth-century Studies, Creative Writing, English Literary Studies, or Twentieth- and Twenty-first-century Literature need an IELTS average of 7 (or equivalent) to be accepted onto the programme. International students applying to the MRes programme need an IELTS score of 7.5 (or equivalent).  For further information about English language tests accepted by the University of Southampton, please see https://www.southampton.ac.uk/international/entry_reqs/english_language.shtml 

International students may apply for entry onto a postgraduate programme before fulfilling the formal English language requirement.  In this case, you may be offered a place on condition that you achieve the required English language test score before the course begins in early October.  For information about pre-sessional summer courses in English for academic purposes, please see https://www.southampton.ac.uk/cls/english/presess.html

No test of English language proficiency is required from international students who come from the countries listed on this page:
