Miss Denise Greenfield is Postgraduate research student within English at the University of Southampton.

I have had a life-long interest in books and have wanted to go back to school to study English for about 20 years. I chose to study at the University of Southampton first and foremost because of its excellent reputation as one of the leading research universities in the UK, and also because it offers an ‘adventurous' English degree that is interdisciplinary in nature and provides students an opportunity to study English in combination with other disciplines. I hold an MA in English from the University of Southampton (2009), an MS in Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School, located in the United States (1995), and a BA in International Studies from Virginia Tech, also located in the United States (1988).

Research interests

I have always been interested in fiction from the American South, and whilst doing my MA at Southampton, I became interested in literature from South Africa. I've found a way to combine these two interests in my PhD research, which examines the narratives, archetypes and metaphors of memory, myth and the body that writers from South Africa and the American South have used to contest histories of racial oppression and segregation.
