Title: ‘Carl Schmitt, Modernism, Sovereignty’. This research project analyses articulations of sovereignty in European avant-garde movements and Anglophone literary modernism. Using case studies from the works of Virginia Woolf, William Faulkner, and Samuel Beckett, and a critical framework of Carl Schmitt’s political philosophy, I investigate how theories of sovereignty intersect with the cravings and sensibilities of aesthetic modernism. Supervised by Dr. Stephanie Jones (University of Southampton) and Dr. Sarah Hayden (University of Southampton).
