Mr Michael Duffy is Postgraduate research student within English at the University of Southampton.

After completing an undergraduate degree in English at the University of Winchester I studied for a Masters in 20th and 21st Century Literature at the University of Southampton in 2012. Across these two institutions I developed an interest in postcolonial fictions and globalization theory and am now studying towards a PhD in South Asian fiction with a primary focus on Pakistan.

Research interests

During my masters I researched the ways in which the World Trade Center attacks of September 11th have been represented in novels by Don Delillo, Joseph O'Neill and Mohsin Hamid with a specific interest in risk theory. My current research topic is ‘Risk, power and globalization in recent English-language Pakistani literature'. I am currently compiling a working bibliography of recent and contemporary fictional writing about Pakistan, and by authors of Pakistani descent, since the 1980s. My first year of research will primarily concentrate on novels pertaining to the period of martial law overseen by General Zia-ul-Haq between 1977-1988.
