Mariana Thomas is a Postgraduate research student for English at the University of Southampton.

I completed my BA in English Literature and Creative Writing at Kingston University, London, in 2012. Following this, I went on to complete an MA in English Literature, again at Kingston University. My MA dissertation sought to analyse the institution of motherhood as portrayed by the writers Toni Morrison, Margaret Atwood, and Lionel Shriver. I finished my MA in 2014 with a Distinction. With a desire to continue my research into the mothering experience, I began my PhD at the University of Southampton in 2015 under the supervision of Professor Clare Hanson.

Research interests

My thesis is currently titled: ‘“Something is pushing them to the side of their own lives”: Experience of Temporality and Subjectivity in Women’s Mother Writing’. I am interested in the emerging sub-genre of maternal memoirs and what they can tell us about the contemporary mothering experience. Particularly the ways in which women negotiate the transition to motherhood and the extent to which ‘post-feminist’ neo-liberal society intensifies this transition. A lot of my research is based on the expanding field of maternal studies, as well as feminist psychoanalysis and philosophy.
