Rana Dasgupta

The project involved visits and readings by leading international writers, a conference on international migration, and creative writing workshops with local schoolchildren. It culminated with the production of of an anthology of contemporary international writing on migration, South of South, edited by the poet Nii Ayikwei Parkes. The first phase of the project was led by the novelist Diran Adebayo, followed by Nii Ayikwei Parkes, and previous visiting writers have included Rana Dasgupta (pictured), Tsitsi Dangarembga, Erna Brodber, Luke Sutherland and Sukhdev Sandhu.

In 2007 the University of Southampton's Learning and Teaching Enhancement Unit awarded a subsequent grant to appoint an additional international writing fellow, Maggie Harris, to design and lead a course on International Writing in Schools. The course involved level 3 English undergraduates working with children in Southampton secondary schools on creative writing projects in collaboration with schoolchildren overseas via virtual learning environments.
