About us

Our standing as one of the UK's leading research universities, our world-renowned academics and proven track record for student satisfaction all contribute to the generation of articulate, confident and highly employable English graduates.

English at Southampton offers a broad and imaginative programme with an interdisciplinary emphasis, drawing on the most recent developments in literary studies. We cover the full range of English literature, with particular strengths in medieval and Renaissance studies, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literature and culture, modernism, and international writing. Our undergraduates have therefore been exposed to a wide range of pedagogical and theoretical approaches and bring subject expertise which they can disseminate both to teachers and to pupils in the schools during their placements.
