Dr Emilio Audissino is an Honorary Fellow in Film at the University of Southampton.

A film scholar and a film musicologist, Emilio Audissino holds a BA Hons from the University of Genoa, an MA in Film Studies from the University of Turin, an MBA in Arts Administration from the Luigi Bocconi University, Milan, and two PhDs, one in History of Visual and Performing Arts from the University of Pisa and one in Film Studies from the University of Southampton. He spent research and study periods in Boston, U.S.A., Paris, France, and was Visiting Scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, U.S.A. In 2013 he won a three-year ‘Vice-Chancellor's Award in Film’ at the University of Southampton to finance his post-doc research on a multi-disciplinary approach to the analysis of music in films. He has taught film history, technique and theory at the Universities of Genoa, Southampton, and West London, and History and Aesthetics of Film Dubbing at UNINT, Università degli Studi Internazionali of Rome in the 2017/2018 academic year.

Dr Audissino’s areas of expertise are mainly Hollywood and Italian cinema, and his interests are film history, film analysis, film style and technique, comedy, horror, and sound and music in films. He has published journal articles, book chapters, and encyclopaedia entries on the history and analysis of films, spanning from the silent era to contemporary cinema. He is the author of the monograph John Williams's Film Music: 'Jaws', 'Star Wars', 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' and the Return of the Classical Hollywood Music Style (University of Wisconsin Press, 2014), the first book-length study in English on the composer John Williams. His new book Film/Music Analysis. A Film Studies Approach (Palgrave MacMillan, 2017) is the fruit of his post-doc research at Southampton and concerns a method to analyse music in films that blends Neoformalism and Gestalt Psychology. His current and forthcoming research commitments deal with horror films (Dario Argento, Mario Bava, zombie films, slasher horrors) and comedy (the cinema of Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker).
