Dr Beth Carroll is a lecturer in Film within Arts and Humanities at the University of Southampton.

Beth’s research focuses on matters relating to audiovisual media, including space, place, and the body. Beth is particularly interested in sound and the impact it has on issues of immersion and phenomenology in film, videogames, and VR.
My research stretches across audiovisual media. I have a particular interest in film, videogames and virtual reality. My focus is often on the affects and effects of audiovisual media on the body. This leads to considerations of space and place, immersion, and issues of control.

My current projects include an exploration of the phenomenological issues involved in videogames (with a consideration for VR), specifically as they relate to disgust and identification. I am also exploring the career of Deanna Durbin and the role of singing. A third project explores the space of cinema, old and new, in the creation of ‘immersive’ experience.
