Professor Veronica Spencer PhD, MA, BA, SFHEA
Professor of Film , Head of Department

Professor Veronica Spencer is Deputy Head of School (Education) for Humanities and Professor of Film Studies at the University of Southampton.
I studied for the BA and MA in English at the University of Southampton, and completed my PhD at the University of Manchester with the support of full British Academy funding. My first appointment at University of Southampton was in a Humanities-based school, which gave me the opportunity to contribute to the development of a number of innovative, interdisciplinary Humanities programmes. I am now Professorial Teaching Fellow in the Film department, where I have held all the major roles, including Director of Programmes for four years.
My interests in Film are centred on the operations of ideology as worked out through popular culture. Alongside this runs an enduring commitment to improving the quality of our educational delivery and our teaching practice, in particular through curriculum design. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and increasingly work in areas in the university and nationally where education and quality issues overlap.
