On 8 July 2012 Southampton Film students hosted a successful conference that brought an international array of academics and students together to discuss Genre Beyond Hollywood.

PhD student and co-organiser Beth Carroll reports on the event:

“I was fortunate enough to organise an international conference alongside Elena Caoduro and Zubair Shafiq Jatoi that was funded by the Film department at the University of Southampton and the Faculty of Humanities. The day was a great success and attracted over 40 delegates from a range of different countries. The aim of the conference was to investigate how generic paradigms are challenged or changed in European and World Cinema contexts.

We were fortunate enough to have Professor Yvonne Tasker deliver the Keynote address titled ‘Exploring Action Cinema in a Global Context’. Her presentation reconsidered the role of genre cinema and demonstrated how the action film is evolving under the influence of other genres and non-western traditions. It was followed by a good discussion by the delegates.

The conference was also fortunate enough to be supported by BAFTSS (the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies) who sponsored a workshop on ‘How to get published’. Prof. Tim Bergfelder, Dr. Deborah Shaw and Dr Kevin Donnelly all provided plenty of practical advice on how best to approach publishers and prepare book proposals.

The day ended with a well-deserved meal out where people could relax, continue debates and generally get to know one another better. The day was a success and provided many new ideas that will no doubt prove fruitful for all those who attended.”
