Your employability

You will be studying a rigorous, analytical, academic degree which will give you many skills of value to potential employers: communication, creativity, organization and time management. Our film courses are designed to provide you with an understanding of film and television as industries, while building a set of key transferable skills to enhance your employability. Our modules have been developed to the highest academic standards and offer a thorough grounding in film theory and critical approaches. You will learn to combine creativity with an analytical approach when studying a variety of films, from Japanese independent world cinema to Hollywood blockbusters and silent movies.

Postgraduate Film Studies at Southampton provides you with the support and the resources to develop the skills developed from your first degree. You will enhance your research capabilities and in many cases have the opportunity to publish your own work. There will be plenty of opportunities for networking and you will regularly be working with universal leaders in your field. This will be particularly beneficial if you wish to pursue your academic interests as a career.

If you are engaging in postgraduate study purely to specialise in an aspect of film that you are interested in, you will still be enhancing your employability. Employers will look favourably on Masters or PhD graduates for the enhanced time-management, research and commitment to study that they have demonstrated.

Our film graduates have gone on to follow a broad range of career paths, and are now in positions such as advertising account executive, PR officer, accountant, academic, festival coordinator, credit controller, project manager, editor, barrister, website editor, market analyst, marketing manager, recruitment manager, archaeologist, TV presenter, army officer, librarian, museum curator, music teacher, orchestral manager, auditor, teacher, police officer, events manager, quantity surveyor, vocal coach, civil servant, risk manager, TEFL teacher, journalist, translator, bilingual researcher, paralegal, political researcher, human resources manager, company director and retail manager.

Humanities careers support

Through events such as our annual postgraduate career day we explore the pathways available to those with higher degrees in Humanities from postgraduate recruiters such as IBM, to local and national government, from the BBC to the EU. The additional skills acquired through a master's or PhD in one of our disciplines can take you where you want to go.
