Hi, I'm Ingrid Stigsdotter and I studied PhD Film Studies within Humanities at the University of Southampton.

I chose to study for a PhD at Southampton because of the expertise offered in areas relevant to my topic of research, which involves exploring cultural and linguistic differences in the reception of contemporary European cinema.

I chose to study for a PhD at Southampton because of the expertise offered in areas relevant to my topic of research, which involves exploring cultural and linguistic differences in the reception of contemporary European cinema. I have found the research environment stimulating and the supervision extremely supportive, and because Film Studies  is quite small, it has been easy to settle in, get to know people and feel at home.

PhD research differs from taught courses in that your work is not structured around lectures and seminars, which among other things means that there are fewer opportunities to get to know other students in the same situation. For students who are new to Southampton it is therefore very valuable that Film actively encourages its PhD students to meet and exchange ideas through various activities such as reading circles and a postgraduate seminar series.

University life

I teach on a number of undergraduate film units, and since I combine this with full time studies I don't have much time for the leisure activities and social events organised by the University and the Students' Union. Despite this, I have to say that one of the highlights of my first semester in Southampton was to go horse-riding in the New Forest with the University Riding Club!
