My subject is ‘The use of same pop music in different dramatic films’, especially the repeated use of the same pop song in Western and East-Asian dramatic movies. I am interested in film music and there is a phenomenon that caught my attention – East Asian movies, such as Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean movies, often use English pop songs used in previous Western movies on their soundtracks. The analysis of the function of western pop songs with the ‘occidentalism’ in the oriental plot and the repeated use of songs is necessary and important for the study of film music. My research focuses on the effect of these ‘same songs’, for example, the match of the typical song with an issue or a certain type of event, the association created by the same melody between different films and even different cultural settings.
