My research focus on the representation of urban space in contemporary Chinese neo-noir. Crossing the boundary between commercial film and art cinema, the creation of Chinese neo-noir not only enriches contemporary Chinese film industry, but also mirrors pessimism, cynicism, fatalism and disorientation in PRC post-socialist cultural context. By examining the spatiality and temporality of dark city, my thesis will explore how contemporary Chinese neo-noir as a transnational phenomenon has been influenced by global film noir, and how Chinese neo-noir plays an important role in contemporary Chinese cinema and cultural industry. My research interests also lie in the fields of contemporary Chinese cinema, genre studies and transnationalism.
