Hi, I'm Oliver Holder and I studied BA Film within Film at the University of Southampton.

Attending the University of Southampton has been the best decision I have ever made and it is an experience that I will never forget. Not only does the course teach you a great deal about the subject you are studying but it is the experience of university life that helps develop you as an individual.

Q: Why did you choose to undertake your studies at the University of Southampton?

I chose the University of Southampton as it was rated highly among the top 10 universities in the UK in which to study Film at. I was really impressed with both Avenue and Highfield campus on the University's open day and the city has so much to offer.

Q: What did you enjoy about studying at Southampton?

Lectures and seminars were never overpopulated; allowing the process of getting to know the other students much easier. Furthermore the course is based over at Avenue campus which is a much smaller campus in comparison to Highfield, making it easy to locate lectures and seminars during your first year. Also the lecturers are fantastic as they are very helpful, easily approachable and are always available to put your mind at rest over any difficulties you may be having.

Q: What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying at the University of Southampton?

Studying Film at the University of Southampton has taught me a great deal of the history of cinema and the important aspects of filmmaking, such as screen writing. However my biggest achievement has to be how the course has helped me develop as an individual, particularly through the presentations in seminars (performed separately and in small groups) which helped build my confidence and presenting skills. Being a JCR member and a course representative also taught me the important factors of responsibility and leadership, which are vital when working in the film industry.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

Film Studies at the University of Southampton is primarily a theory-based course. This resulted in a vast improvement of my knowledge and understanding of cinema, as well as the ability to improve my writing skills. The societies that I was a member of during my time at the University (Filmsoc, SUSUtv and Wessex Films) allowed me to work with cameras and other equipment that I was unfamiliar with. Furthermore these societies brought me closer to people who share the same passion for film and who understood the creative aspect of filmmaking. My plans now are to immerse myself as much as possible into the practical side of filmmaking, developing my understanding of the industry so that I am able to confidently direct my own work.

Q: Any other comments

Attending the University of Southampton has been the best decision I have ever made and it is an experience that I will never forget. Not only does the course teach you a great deal about the subject you are studying but it is the experience of university life that helps develop you as an individual. I have learnt a great deal during my time at the University of Southampton, but most importantly it is the lifelong friends that I have made. If I had the opportunity to go back to my first year at the University of Southampton and do it all again, I most definitely would!
