Meet the Directorate Team

Sarah Pook, Executive Director – Finance & Planning

Sarah joined the University as Director of Finance in September 2011 from Hampshire County Council. She is responsible for the financial systems we use at the University, as well as stewardship of the University’s finances, budgeting and preparation of the financial statements and maintaining a sound system of internal control. Most importantly, Sarah is responsible for the Finance department’s vision to enable its customers to expand their possibilities through information led financial support and commercial enquiry. Sarah is a CIPFA qualified accountant and also a chartered member of CIPD, which makes for an interesting mix in a Finance director.

Julie Fielder, Director of Finance – Planning

Julie joined Finance at Southampton University in January 2014, as Assistant Director of Finance: Business Support. She is responsible for the Faculty Finance Teams, overseeing business partner support and leading on the Business Planning process, including the University’s Treasury Management Strategy. She also oversees the EU Office, who are a specialist team, focusing on EU research. Previously, Julie worked for the Cabinet Office where she was Head of Performance and Planning. Outside of work, Julie enjoys spending time with her family and going to the theatre.

Mary White – Director of Finance  - Operations

 

Mary has been working for the University since 1997, when she was a Financial Administrator in the Department of Physics & Astronomy. Her other roles here have included Finance Director at the University of Southampton Science Park, Senior Faculty Accountant for Law, Art and Social Sciences. She has also been Head of Faculty Finance for the Faculty of Social, Human and Mathematical Sciences as well as Head of Procurement & Business Improvement. In September 2013, Mary took up her current position as Assistant Director of Finance, where she is responsible for Transactions and Procurement for 6 main areas: Procurement; Expenses, Accounts Payable and Purchasing; Payroll and Pensions; Finance Systems; Income and Fees. Outside of work, Mary is a member of Southampton Philharmonic Choir and enjoys going to the gym.

Julie Shaw, Personal Assistant

Julie joined the Finance department in January 1980, for 5 years when she worked in the then Salaries and Wages department, a job which included folding thousands of payslips by hand every month! Julie then rejoined the Finance department in May 1989, when she worked in Pensions until 1991 and then in Payroll until 1994, when she took up her current position as Personal Assistant to the Directorate Team. Along side this role, her responsibilities include overseeing health and safety in the department as well as managing HR-facing paperwork. Outside of work, Julie is an avid support and season ticket holder for Southampton football club and enjoys running and sports.

Meet Heads of Faculty Finance

James Sturgess, Head of Financial Operations

James has been working for the University since 2000, when he joined as the accountant for the School of Biological Sciences. He went on to become the Financial Manager in ISVR from 2002 and the became ISVR School Manager in 2005. In 2010, James was appointed as the Engineering and the Environment Head of Faculty Finance – a post held for five years. In October 2015, James took up his current position as Head of Financial Operations, where he is responsible leading and managing the strategy for financial transactions with specific oversight and responsibility for international activity, tax and insurance. Outside of work, James is a keen sports enthusiast with interests in art, travel and the natural world.

Clare Taylor, Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering

Clare joined the University in 1999 as a Finance Assistant for Maths. She progressed to work with Chemistry, and then later moved to the faculties of Business, Law & Art and Humanities. From February 2015 she has become the Head of Faculty Finance for Physical Sciences and Engineering with an overall economy of £70m . Clare is responsible for business planning, monthly management accounts, financial forecasts as well as advising the faculty senior management team  and managing a team of 12 finance staff. Outside of work, Clare enjoys keeping fit by walking and is kept busy by her 3 daughters. She also does voluntary work through her local church.

Chris Tollerfield, Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine

Chris started working at the University in March 2008, when he joined as a Senior Management accountant for what was then Medicine, Health and Life Sciences. Since 2011, he has been based at Southampton General full time in his current role as Head of Faculty Finance for Medicine and Health Sciences, but enjoys coming back over to Health Sciences in Highfield  once a week, if nothing other than for his coffee fix in the Staff Club. With the biggest research economy of all of the faculties, Chris manages all Finance facing aspects for the Faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences. Previously, Chris has worked as a management accountant for the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, as well as some work in the car industry. Outside of work, Chris’ life is equally as busy with time spent cycling, playing and coaching cricket, looking after an allotment and being a governor for a local school.

Simon Mason, Faculty of Engineering and the Environment

Simon Mason joined the University of Southampton Finance department in 2000, where he was a Fixed Assets Accountant and Company Accountant in Financial Accounts. Simon has had many positions in Finance, including School Accountant within the old FESM Faculty, Costing and Pricing Accountant and HoFF within Natural & Environmental Sciences. Simon has also spent some time seconded to iSolutions, helping to implement our Finance System, Agresso, and previous research management and costing systems. In his current role as Head of Faculty Finance, Simon is responsible for all financial aspects of the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment, as well as advising the Dean and Faculty Management Team. Simon also takes the lead for the Finance Department on research, heads up the EU Finance Team based in Building 37 and chairs the Finance Research Forum. Previous jobs for Simon include working for NERC (Natural Environment Research Council), in Surrey and then later at the Southampton docks. In his spare time, Simon enjoys camping and walking and the treasurer for a local youth football team and a School Governor.

Karen McKinstry, Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences

Karen joined the University in 2001 as the Finance Manager for Business and Community Services having previously worked at Bournemouth Borough Council and Hampshire County Council. She qualified as a Chartered Public Finance Accountant in 1989. In 2010 she became the Deputy Head of Faculty Finance for FNES and then in February 2016 she was promoted to the Head. With an overall economy of £60m Karen is responsible for the financial elements of business planning, monthly monitoring of the accounts and the management of a team of 6 to deliver the management accounting service to the Faculty -  including research, studentships, recharging for services and budget monitoring and reporting.

Karen is a Saints fan and enjoys anything sport related.

Lorna Leverett, Faculty of Business, Law and Art, Humanities and Winchester School of Art

Lorna joined the University of Southampton in 1996, and has worked in several different roles during that time, including School Administrator for the School of Ocean and Earth Science, School Accountant for ORC & ISVR and most recently as the DHOFF in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment.  Her appointment in April 2015 as the Head of Faculty Finance for Humanities and Business and Law encompasses supporting the Dean’s and Faculty Executive Groups, and being responsible for all aspects of finance within the two Faculties.  The Finance teams are split across three campus offices, so Lorna shares her time between these locations, which are at Highfield, Avenue and WSA.  Leisure activities include photography, textiles, baking and being a far too frequent taxi service to her teenage son!

Joanne Payne, Head of Professional Services Finance

Joanne joined the University in 2006 as Business Accountant for Estates & Facilities. She was promoted in 2010 to Head of Professional Services Finance for the former COO group, then in 2015 to her current position as Head of all Professional Services Finance. Joanne is a graduate of Loughborough University and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. She has previously worked in manufacturing industry for Manor Bakeries and Amphenol (engineering), and also in the retail sector for the Nuance Group (international duty & tax free retailers).Outside of work, Joanne enjoys reading, going to the theatre, travel and has started to learn to ballroom dance.
