The Global Conversation: What's your culture?
On November 6th 2018, Bradley Tombleson and Francesca Mottram, in collaboration with the Faculty International Office of Social Sciences, launched ‘The Global Conversation’ series. The opening event ‘What’s Your Culture?’ commenced the series with a presentation followed with a lively discussion of what culture means to different people. Francesca noted the attendance of students and staff with a “passion and enthusiasm for learning about culture” and has stated that the aim of the event was to create a platform in which to encourage people to explore other cultures.
There was diverse group of attendees which included representation from over twenty-five countries. During the course of the evening, guest speakers shared stories of their personal experiences of trying to make a new country their home. Further to the contributions from speakers, the conversation amongst attendees focused on various aspects of daily life, from etiquette and language barriers, to employment and family lives. The evening provided an engaging opportunity for students and staff to learn about the various cultures of people within the Faculty. Bradley has described the group discussion as “a fascinating and eclectic mix of opinions and experiences that helped quash stereotypes” and would like to thank the attendees for the success of the event.
