On Monday 11 March, the University of Southampton had the pleasure of visiting our partner university Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) in Guangzhou, southern China.

The Southampton team consisted of Kieron Broadhead: Executive Director of Student Experience, Alex Bonczoszek: Associate Director of International Student Recruitment, Song Utz: Faculty of Social Sciences International Office Senior Manager and Katie Bizley: Faculty of Social Sciences International Officer.

Currently, we have a Law partnership and have welcomed a number of visiting students from Sun Yat-sen over the last few years.

During our visit, we met with Mr Zhe (David) Zhang, Director of the International Office and Mr Ian J Heuer, Programmes Manager for European Affairs. Ian had previously visited Southampton and met with Katie Bizley in November 2017.

Following this, the Southampton delegation met with senior colleagues in the School of Law. Professor GUO Ping, Executive Director for the Centre for International Maritime & Oceans Law and Southampton visiting scholar in 2000-2001. Prior to joining SYSU, Professor GUO worked at Dalian Maritime University, where Southampton shares a very close relationship. Associate Professor LIAO Yanpin, had also visited Southampton in 2007 and is currently vice director for the Centre for International Maritime and Oceans Law. Additionally, Mr Lei Wei who works with the School of Law’s partner and exchange programmes joined the visit.

As part of our discussions, we looked at continuing to welcome SYSU students and also opportunities for staff exchange.

Following our meeting, the team were delighted to join SYSU colleagues for an exquisite lunch, which included the highlight of Enoki mushrooms with Hainan island chilli. A true delicacy!
