Faculty of Social Sciences hosts a joint seminar with the National Institute of Social Development, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Southampton School of Economic, Social and Political Sciences

On 10th September 2019, the National Institute of Social Development, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and Southampton School of Economic, Social and Political Sciences gathered to discuss Population Trends, Social Change and Sustainable Development Impact on policies and programs in China. The delegates met to discuss and share findings from their current research projects, and identify common areas of research for future collaboration opportunities.

The seminar began with a warm welcome and introduction by Professor Sabu Padmadas, Associate Dean International for the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Professor Peilin Li, a renowned sociologist and former vice-president of CASS.

Professor Peilin Li opened the discussions, sharing his insights on consumption, income distribution and a new stage of development in China.  This was followed by Professor Lin Li, Director of the CASS Institute of Law and Vice-Chairman of the China Law Society, who shared an account of 40-years of development of reform and legislation in China.

Southampton’s Professor Corrado Giulietti, Head of Economics; Professor Jackie Wahba, Economics Research Director; and Dr Chuhong Wang, Research Fellow at the ESRC Centre for Population Change, spoke about their joint research on the migration and stock market participation of the left behind in China.

The first half of the seminar was then brought to close by Professor Yi Zhang, Director of the Chinese National Institute of Social Development (NISD), who discussed his compelling work on demographic change and education upgrading in China.

Professor ZhaoYang Sun of NISD discussed higher education expansion and structural changes in employment in China.  Following Professor Zhaoyang's presentation, Dr YongYuan Chen shared her insights on the topic of Double variations: Big data analysis of the social mentality of the young middle class in China.  The presentations from NISD were concluded by NISD Assistant Professor Dr Xue Liu, who shared research on digital technology, innovation and sustainable development.

The one-day conference concluded with a presentation from Southampton’s Professor Sabu Padmadas, who discussed A demographic dead-end? The mid-21st century China. Throughout the event, the insightful presentations from renowned academics and researchers prompted valuable and meaningful discussions.

Professor Padmadas concluded the afternoon with a vote of thanks, with a reflection on the future work between the National Institute of Social Development, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Southampton School of Economic, Social and Political Sciences to make the world a better place, also reflecting on the possibility of partnership together.

After the event, the delegation had the opportunity to visit nearby Winchester, ancient capital of England, where they enjoyed walking through the historical city, and a meal afterwards in a local restaurant.
