Induction Meeting 26th September 2019
At the start of each academic year, the Faculty International Office is on hand to welcome the new student intake and to help them to settle into living and studying in Southampton. On 26th September 2019, the FIO ran an induction session specifically for partnership students. The purpose of this meeting was to welcome the students to the Faculty of Social Sciences, introduce academic and FIO staff, and to offer them useful advice as they commence their studies.
The session commenced with an opening talk delivered by Prof Sabu Padmadas, Associate Dean International of Social Sciences. This was followed by introductions by Prof Corrado Giulietti, Head of Economics, and Dr Jan Podivinsky, Director of Internationalisation in Economics, to welcome students to the Economics department. Dr Bai Xue, Study Abroad Coordinator of Southampton Business School, was also present to welcome the students studying subjects within the Southampton Business School.
Prof John Aldridge, Student Academic Tutor of Economics, then delivered a welcome presentation to students, in which he gave examples of common cultural differences, which can cause difficulties and explained how students can best overcome these issues. Within his presentation, John introduced himself to the students as their academic tutor and gave the contact details of other support staff in attendance, including the FIO team and Meng Zhan, Student Advisor.
After the welcome presentation, Song Pan Utz, Senior Manager Faculty International Office, introduced the FIO team members in attendance, spoke of her own experience as an international student, and encouraged students to participate in social events and take advantage of the opportunities available to them. Meng Zhan then spoke of his own experience as a partnerships student travelling from China to live in the UK and study at Southampton. He encouraged students with any queries or concerns to attend his sessions in order to approach him for advice.
The FIO team would like to thank the students and staff who attended. It was very nice to meet you all! We hope to see some familiar faces at some of our upcoming events!
