In February, the Faculty International Office shared an inspiring story about a Coronavirus fundraising campaign launched by Business School students in collaboration with the Chinese Association of Southampton. Due to a fantastic community response, this campaign raised over £10,000.00 towards medical supplies for some of China’s worse affected hospitals.

The situation in China has now improved, and the United Kingdom, along with many countries across the globe, has since seen a rise in cases. As a result of this all citizens have been asked to do our part, by social distancing, as well as supporting the vulnerable within our community.

The organisers of the fundraising campaign for China, recognise the generous community spirit both locally and internationally and believe that we can go further. They have therefore changed the beneficiary of their fundraising campaign for medical supplies to be sent to the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

In March, representatives of the Chinese Association of Southampton, student organizers, and volunteer coordinators visited the Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Peter Baillie. They presented him with a certificate of appreciation to thank him for his support for the fundraising campaign. A volunteer coordinator from London has also donated 100 diagnostic kits (used to detect if a person has been infected by the COVID-19). These have been shipped from China, to the Mayor’s office.

The Faculty International Office is in awe of our students for their pragmatic approach to the global challenge that this Coronavirus has presented, and thanks Councillor Peter Baillie for his continued support of this inspirational fundraising campaign.
