On the 7th July 2020, Professor Marika Taylor, Head of School for Mathematical Sciences, gave a lecture on ‘The Mathematics of Covid-19.’ This was organised by The Research Council in association with the Data Academy of the Sultanate of Oman. This event was part of our Faculty's international outreach activities.

Professor Taylor discussed how Mathematical Sciences is an interdisciplinary field that is being used to explore the spread of Covid-19, as well as its repercussions and impacts. Within the lecture, Professor Taylor engaged with the Omani audience and provided an overview of the Mathematics study programmes available in Southampton.

The lecture also explained how Southampton mathematicians are involved in many Covid-19 projects, from analysing health data to exploring how lockdowns can safely be relaxed. The talk focussed on the mathematical modelling of measures such as social distancing, and explored how predictive modelling tools can be used by police, health services, and policy makers.
