On 19th April 2021, colleagues from Social Sciences had a very productive online meeting with Keio University in Japan.

There is already an exchange agreement in place between Keio University and Southampton’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Faculty of Social Sciences is interested in broadening this agreement to include students of Politics and International Relations and Economics. When Dr Bindi Shah (Lecturer in Sociology within Southampton’s Sociology, Social Policy & Criminology department) had visited Keio University before the pandemic, the possibility of adding to the agreement was left open pending future discussions.

Prof Russell Bentley (Head of Politics and International Relations) and Prof Corrado Giulietti (Head of Economics) have now met online with Prof Yukihiro Ikeda (Dean of Keio’s Faculty of Economics), Ms Hideko Sumita (Director of Keio’s International Office) and Dr Chikako Kashiwazaki (Associate Professor of Sociology at Keio University) to engage in these conversations. They were joined by Prof Sabu Padmadas (Associate Dean International for the Faculty of Social Sciences), Dr Jan Podivinsky (Director of Internationalisation for Economics), and Ms Song Pan Utz (Senior Manager of the Faculty International Office of Social Sciences).

The Faculty of Social Sciences intends to build upon these conversations. We are hopeful that these talks will lead to more opportunities in the future and strengthen the existing partnership between the University of Southampton and Keio University.
