On 7th March 2022, the Faculty International Office of Social Sciences and academic colleagues representing our schools, were delighted to host our first virtual promotion with Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Indonesia. UGM invited students from all the related Faculties, including students from their International Undergraduate Programme, to attend this Zoom session.

This promotional event follows the announcement in June 2021 of the signing of a faculty-wide partnership agreement. The agreement will allow students from UGM to participate in Faculty of Social Sciences study abroad programmes, with options to progress to Master’s degree programmes across all five Schools.

Dobrin Bugov (Department of International Relations, Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, UGM) chaired the meeting. The opening address was delivered by Dr I Made Andi Arsana (Head of International Affairs, UGM), who talked about the cooperation between Southampton and UGM.

Dr Rob Angell (Associate Dean International of Social Sciences) then introduced himself and the Southampton panel of speakers. After Rob’s introduction, Dr Jan Podivinsky (Director of Internationalisation, School of Economics, Social and Political Sciences), Dr Carlos Lobo (Director of Internationalisation, School of Mathematical Sciences), Dr Haris Psarras (Director of Internationalisation, Southampton Law School), and Dr Stephan Onggo (Director of Internationalisation, Southampton Business School (SBS)) each gave engaging talks about the study abroad programmes their respective schools, detailing the entry requirements, and other key information.

This was followed by Song Utz (Senior Executive Officer, Faculty International Office of Social Sciences) and Miriam Gómez López (Faculty International Officer) who gave a presentation with helpful information about how we support international students throughout their student journeys at Southampton and pointed out the resources available.

After the staff panel presentations concluded, we welcomed Elyada Wigati, a UGM alumna student, who shared details of her living and learning experience at Southampton. Elyada gave practical advice to students about how to manage their studies well and explained that students can contact their Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) if they need help. To make friends, Elyada suggested that students join SUSU societies or get involved in the wider Southampton community. She mentioned that students can further broaden their horizons by eating international cuisine at the local restaurants, visit parks and galleries, and travel to other UK cities. We thank Elyada for her time and valuable advice!

FIO looks forward to welcoming UGM partnership students to Southampton!
