Matt Kandel is a Research Associate for Building REsearch Capacity for sustainable water and food security in drylands of sub-saharan Africa (BRECcIA), a RCUK-GCRF project in Geography and Environment

Matt’s research has focused particularly on how land—or more specifically, access to and control over land—lies at the nexus of conflict and potential pathways to agrarian development in rural Africa.  His work on land tenure and conflict in Africa has drawn heavily on his extensive fieldwork in Uganda.  Matt is motivated by the policy and applied implications of his work, as he aims to bridge the space between critical inquiry and practice.

Currently, Matt is a Research Associate for Building REsearch Capacity for sustainable water and food security In drylands of sub-saharan Africa (BRECcIA) in Geography and Environment.  BRECcIA is a four-year RCUK Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF) project that aims to develop research capacity and strengthen existing research capabilities in Kenya, Ghana, and Malawi in the areas of food and water security.  BRECcIa aims to deliver impact through a program of capacity development, capability enhancement, partnership building, and targeted research, all with an aim towards improving policy and creating more sustainable practices within the context of food/water security.  Matt works on the Resilience theme within the project, which works in coordination with other themes such as Capacity Development, Policy, and Interventions.

Matt maintains an interdisciplinary and mixed-methods approach to his research, and is always keen to discuss potential collaborations with researchers and practitioners alike.
