Dr Warren C. (“Chris”) Jochem is a Research Fellow in Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Southampton.

Chris Jochem received a BA in Geography from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA) and an MA and PhD in Geography and a Graduate Certificate in Demography from the University of Colorado Boulder (USA). His work focuses on the geographic patterns of human health and disease, particularly how social, economic, and political contexts shape human-environment interactions. While at the University of Colorado his research combined fieldwork and statistical modelling to examine the social and spatial patterns of exposure to arsenic-contaminated drinking water and the impacts on respiratory health in rural Bangladesh. At the University of Southampton, Chris is now part of the WorldPop project and his primary focus is on developing and applying quantitative spatial methods for high resolution predictive mapping of population distributions and demographics.

Research projects

The WorldPop Project

High resolution, contemporary data on human population distributions are a prerequisite for the accurate measurement of the impacts of population growth, for monitoring changes and for planning interventions. The WorldPop project aims to meet these needs through the provision of detailed and open access population distribution datasets built using transparent approaches.
