Geography is delighted to announce the appointments of two new academic lecturers from April 2011.

Dr Andrew Power will join the School's Population, Health and Wellbeing (PHEW) research group. Andrew has Undergraduate, Masters and Doctoral degrees from the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, where his PhD supervisor was Prof Rob Kitchin, and he has since worked at the University of Lancaster and National University of Ireland, Galway.
Andrew's work focuses on health and social policy, particularly on issues relating to people with disabilities and mental health challenges and on policy issues relating to care giving. He is the author of Landscapes of Care: Comparative Perspectives on Family Care giving (Ashgate, 2010).

Dr Gareth Roberts will join the School’s Global Environmental Change and Earth Observation (GECEO) research Group. Gareth obtained his MSc and PhD from University College London and has subsequently been working as a research associate at King’s College London. His research interests are focussed on monitoring land surface dynamics using optical and thermal remote sensing with an application to address fire impact and effects. Part of Gareth’s research has included the development, and operational implementation by EUMETSAT, of a fire detection and characterisation algorithm.
