BASAS conference secures British Academy support grant

Published: 22 March 2011

Dr. Kanchana N. Ruwanpura (PI) together with Prof. Ian Talbot (Co-I) and Dr. Stephanie Jones (Co-I) have been successful in securing a British Academy Conference Support Grant worth over £10,000 towards the 25th anniversary BASAS Conference which will be hosted at the University of Southampton this year.

The conference theme is "Bodies of Power, Forms of Power: South Asia through History and Across Disciplines" and it aims to lay bare the diverse and complex ways in which power is and has been negotiated in the South Asia region. Through the key terms of "bodies" and "forms", the conference aims to encourage interdisciplinary conversations about the ways in which power is understood, endorsed and undermined in both everyday lives, and at fraught moments of South Asian history. The conference panels and paper are keyed around issues of community, class, and caste; ethnicity and gender; nation, governance, law; geography, development, culture, environment; language, linguistics and representation.

This is a cross faculty initiative between the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences and the Faculty of Humanities.
