Leading river expert appointed Head of Geography and Environment

Published: 27 August 2013

Professor Steve Darby has been appointed the new Head of Geography and Environment, with effect from September 2013.

Educated at Queen Mary, University of London (BSc in Geography 1990) and the University of Nottingham (PhD in Fluvial Geomorphology 1994), Professor Darby held posts at the University of Florence in Italy and at the US Department of Agriculture’s National Sedimentation Laboratory in Oxford, Mississippi, before joining Southampton in 1997. Appointed to his personal chair in 2009, Steve has broad interests in river morphodynamics, and is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost experts on river bank erosion.

Steve said, "I am delighted to be appointed Head of Geography and Environment. Any department is only as good as its staff and I am extremely fortunate to be leading a set of colleagues who are recognised as leading geographical scholars. These committed individuals draw on their discipline-shaping research to provide an outstanding educational experience for our students. I am looking forward to celebrating their continued successes."

Steve will continue to engage closely with undergraduate students via his module on Drainage Basin Geomorphology and via participation in field classes.
